Chapter One

The man walked away from the Infirmary with nothing that resembled a plan, and let the city settle around him.

Glasgow was fully awake. Men unloaded vegetables along Duke Street. Apprentices smoked hurriedly before clocking in. Women with shopping bags moved in unhurried purpose toward the Co-operative. Nothing unusual. Nothing theatrical. A city doing what it always did, wrapped around whatever it was concealing.

He listened. He watched. Nothing came back from the streets—not yet.

A principle surfaced, clear as a voice beside him:

When you don't know what to do—do nothing.

So he did nothing. He walked the length of the High Street, crossed into the Saltmarket, and let the city speak. Glasgow never bothered to conceal its tension—it wore it openly, as a working man wears a coat that doesn't quite fit. But none of what he was reading was aimed at him. Whatever had happened in the night had disturbed the city's balance, and the city was working through what that meant.

Near London Road he stopped in a doorway and took the measure of the place.

Questions would achieve nothing. No one would speak to a stranger—not willingly, not honestly. He neither walked nor sounded as if he belonged, and in a city that noticed such things, that alone would close every door he tried.

Information here didn't move through conversation.

It moved through visibility.

He turned toward the Barras.

The market was waking unevenly. Traders lifted shutters. Men in flat caps unloaded boxes from the backs of vans. Someone cursed with considerable invention over a broken barrow wheel. A runner slipped between stalls on business that was evidently not connected to the buying or selling of anything legal. The corners held too many men doing too little.

Nothing overt. Just air stretched several degrees past comfortable.

He reached inside his coat and drew out a revolver—old, heavy, a relic from another era, kept more as an heirloom than a functioning weapon. He held it low at his side until people began to notice. Then he raised it above his head.

Conversation thinned. Frayed. Died.

"My name is Anton Lytle," he said, at a volume that required no effort to carry. "I'm looking for Maggie McRae."

Heads turned. Hands tightened on crates. A young woman froze beside a fruit stall.

"If anyone can help me find her, speak now," he said. "Or I'll start shooting people."

Silence.

Then a reaction quite unlike anything a sensible man might have expected.

A fishmonger laughed. "Christ Almighty, put that thing away, ye daft bastard!"

"He's aff his heid!"

"Is that even loaded?"

One man ducked, then straightened quickly, visibly embarrassed with himself. Two elderly women gasped—not frightened, but deeply offended. A boy bolted in the direction of the nearest policeman.

Anton remained still. The revolver hung loose in his hand. His expression was calm. His breathing steady. His posture that of a man who had considered his options and remained committed to the one he'd chosen.

Several men watched him differently from the rest. Not traders. Watchers—the kind that every territory ran, reporting back to whoever ran it. One slipped quietly into shadow. Another walked away with purpose, head down.

Good.

Two constables approached at a measured walk—not running. Glasgow police never ran unless blood was already on the ground.

"That'll do," the older one said. "Put it down, son."

Anton complied at once. He set the revolver gently on the cobbles and stepped back. The younger constable lifted it carefully and turned it over.

"Bloody hell. This thing's older than you, Sarge."

"Right," the older officer said, taking Anton firmly by the arm. "You're coming with us. For your own good, if nothing else."

Anton did not resist.

As they led him away, the market watched with the particular Glasgow expression that combined amusement, irritation, a small thread of fear, and the contempt reserved for men who cause scenes in public without having the local credentials to justify them.

"Tell Archie he owes me a fiver!" someone shouted.

Laughter followed, and the market went back to work.

Inside the van, the door closed with a dull clang. Anton sat in the dim compartment, hands resting loosely on his thighs, his breathing steady.

Everything had worked.

Anyone involved in the girl's disappearance would now know that a stranger from the South was looking for her: openly, recklessly, and without any apparent regard for his own wellbeing or the social conventions of the city he was in.

The engine rumbled to life. The van rolled forward, then stopped briefly as a group of young nuns crossed the road ahead of them, their conversation carrying through the metal walls in fragments—something about a letter, and the weather, and whether Sister Bridget had any idea what she was doing with the accounts.

Anton closed his eyes.

Glasgow, he thought. As close to heaven as hell gets.

She had been watching him for three minutes before he reached inside his coat.

She had expected no one. She had planned for no one. The whole point of disappearing was that no one came looking—not this quickly, not in person, not walking through the Saltmarket with the unhurried gait of a man who had all the time in the world and none of the local sense to know what he was walking into.

But there he was. Moving through the crowd like a man who belonged nowhere and therefore belonged anywhere he chose. Not searching. Assessing. Air currents. Footfall. Intent.

She knew the way he occupied space before she knew his face: loose at the edges, alert at the core, reading the street without appearing to read anything at all. She had noticed it the first time she'd seen him and hadn't been able to set it down since.

Her pulse stuttered. He shouldn't be here.

She was standing beside a stall hung with linen shirts, the veil low over her eyes, the habit making her unremarkable in a market where nuns were a common enough sight. She matched his pace along the opposite pavement without quite deciding to. He turned toward the Barras. She followed at the same distance, moving with the unhurried stride of a woman on an errand. The market itself felt unsettled—a low current running beneath its ordinary noise, as if the city had already registered that something was about to change.

He walked straight into the centre of it.

She watched him reach a decision—the small, definite shift in his posture she had come to recognise. A man committing.

Then he did something she hadn't imagined in any version of her worst guesses.

He reached inside his coat and drew out the revolver. Old, heavy, unmistakable. He raised it above his head.

For one full second she forgot to breathe.

Not because she feared he would fire. She saw immediately that the gesture was deliberate, controlled, designed to create space and silence rather than damage. The market reacted the way Glasgow always reacted first: confusion, a surge of jeering, a handful of late and undignified ducking movements. A roar of noise rolled outward from him in a ring.

Then his voice cut through all of it.

"My name is Anton Lytle, and I'm looking for Maggie McRae."

Her knees nearly went from under her.

He wasn't hiding. He wasn't circling in shadows like a man with any instinct for self-preservation. He had stepped into the dead centre of the city and announced his purpose like a man lighting a beacon on high ground—telling every watcher in every direction: here I am. Come and find me.

Heat rose under her ribs—anger, relief, dread, and something beneath all three that she refused to name.

Around him, at the edges of the crowd, she saw several figures disengage from doorways and stalls. Her father's watchers. None of them looked surprised. They were recalibrating.

The older of the two policemen spoke with Glasgow plainness: "That'll do. Put it down, son."

Anton obeyed without a flicker of resistance. He placed the weapon carefully on the cobbles and stepped back. His face didn't harden; it focused. And as the policemen took him by the arms, he scanned the crowd one final time—brief, sharp, searching.

He was looking for her.

They walked him toward the van. A small crowd trailed after as if drawn by heat. Someone jeered. Someone shouted that Archie McRae owed him money. Two older women crossed themselves. A boy sprinted off to sell the story to whoever would pay for it first.

Anton didn't appear rattled. He appeared certain.

The van door slammed. The vehicle lurched forward—pausing only to allow a line of nuns to cross the road, which it did without apparent irony—then continued toward St Andrew's Square.

Maggie stayed still until the last watcher drifted away. Only then did she let out a breath.

She didn't know his name until he'd shouted it across the market. She knew only what she had seen: a man from somewhere else, moving through a city that wasn't his, looking for a woman he had no business looking for—and willing to make himself a target to do it.

A principle she'd carried for years surfaced unbidden:

When in doubt, do nothing.

She had built the rule herself—years of understanding that reaction was the power someone else wanted from you. Stillness denied them that. It had kept her alive through every script written for her: her father's, the cell's, the hospital's. It had carried her out of all of them and into this habit, this market, this careful anonymity.

But the rule assumed that nothing would change.

She stepped out from behind the linen stall and walked away calmly, though her heart was loud in her ears.

Everything had changed.

A stranger had walked into the Barras, stuck a gun in the air, and shouted her name to a city that was already hunting for her. Whatever happened next would not be still. Whatever happened next would not be nothing.

Maggie McRae pulled the veil low and disappeared into Glasgow.

Chapter Two

Crane knew it was a mistake the moment he turned off the main road. Bringing the Bentley into the depths of The Pound was vanity—unnecessary, obvious, juvenile vanity. Every rutted yard of track hammered the undercarriage; every fracture in the baked earth sent a clean shock up his spine. The car didn't belong here. No Bentley ever had, and no Bentley ever would. He felt the fact of it with a grim, resigned clarity and knew there would be a price to pay.

The CO at The Cot had offered him a Jeep—anonymous, expendable, invisible in the way The Pound preferred. A machine that looked as if it had crawled out of a ditch and would willingly crawl back into one. But the Bentley was new, polished, still carrying the smell of leather and hand-finished work. Still, irresistibly, a reminder of her.

And so here it was, choking in dust, juddering over chalk, affronted by the land. Crane braked. A cloud of dust rolled gently past him and drifted forward over the bonnet like smoke from a field already lost.

Silence settled. Then nothing but the weight of their eyes.

They surrounded him—hard, appraising young men who had learned early how to measure a stranger. To them he was merely an entertainment.

He was Major Richard Crane, Liaison Officer to the Court of St James. Newly appointed. Newly expendable. As he stepped down from the car, he wondered if he'd survive the month.

What the public knew as Salisbury Plain was in reality land leased to the Ministry of Defence by a Trust that some considered more powerful than any elected government. Crane had understood this in the abstract; standing on it was different. This was not the maps-and-memos version. This was the crucible—the place where boys were taken apart and rebuilt into something serviceable, something sharpened, something the country relied on without acknowledgement and would never discuss in polite company.

He had been sent by a nameless man in an immaculate grey suit—the type who left no trace except a faint drop in temperature when he left the room.

Go to The Cot. Summon Lytle. Tell him this.

A slim file had been pressed into Crane's hand. Questions had not been invited—only a curt injunction delivered with disdain.

"And Crane—don't mess it up. Lytle is the future."

The words had stayed with him all the way down the track. The thin pages weighed on him even now, a heavier burden than they had any right to be.

The Training Officer barely glanced at the Bentley. He barely glanced at Crane. His expression suggested he had seen every variety of fool, but none quite like this one, and that the distinction still didn't interest him.

"Which one's Lytle?" Crane asked.

That earned him the TO's first proper look—a mixture of scorn and the weary contempt of a man who had spent too long turning boys into weapons.

"You read his file?" the TO said.

"Yes."

"Then take a wild fucking guess."

Crane followed his gaze.

Down in a churned hollow of earth, five men circled a sixth. At first glance the sixth appeared unassailable—balanced, centred, already winning. A second glance corrected the impression: he was still just a boy, young enough that the contrast unsettled rather than reassured.

The five wore boots and boilersuits and carried weighted sticks—dockside bruisers, reshaped into soldiers. The boy wore shorts and plimsolls. No padding. No protection. His fists were bare, his legs bare, his face empty of anything Crane recognised as fear.

Crane took half a step forward without realising he had moved. The TO flinched.

"Lytle!" Crane shouted—the name tearing out of him like a father's warning before sense could intervene.

The TO swore under his breath—"Oh, you bloody fool"—and seized Crane's arm, grip iron-hard. The boy turned.

A stick cracked across his jaw with such force that Crane felt it in his own teeth. The boy's head rocked. He stayed upright. Crane pulled against the grip. It tightened.

"Jesus Christ," Crane muttered. Then, in something close to awe: "He'll kill them."

And he did. Not in a frenzy, and without apparent haste—just immaculate, economical violence, the kind that comes from somewhere far beyond training. Something older, present before The Pound got hold of it, honed long before any official programme had found its way into him. Whatever it was, it had been there first. Crane watched as five grown men dropped in swift succession, thrown and folded and finished.

Something shifted inside him. Admiration, and the edge of a memory he didn't want to examine, and beneath both, a slow unease at what was now his responsibility. He had hoped that this particular order of violence was his past, not his future.

When it was done, Anton climbed out of the pit—not breathless, not triumphant. Merely inconvenienced. He carried one of the weighted sticks over his shoulder like a forgotten piece of camping equipment, and touched the bruised line along his jaw with mild curiosity, his eyes already assessing the cause of the minor interruption.

"Got any water?"

Crane froze. The voice was soft. Polite, even. Behind him, the Bentley ticked quietly as it cooled.

"He's talking to you," the TO said. "Got anything in that yacht of yours?"

"Tea. And some whisky, I think."

He moved to the boot and Anton followed, circling the Bentley with the quiet interest of a man studying an exotic animal that had wandered into the wrong habitat. Before Crane could speak, Anton slipped a hand inside, found the release lever, and lifted the bonnet to inspect the engine—enormous, gleaming, absurd beneath an open sky that had no use for such things.

"This car doesn't belong here," was all he said.

Crane opened his mouth. Nothing came. Anton carefully closed the bonnet, took the flask of tea from Crane's hand, and drank it in one long, unembarrassed pull as if it were spring water. He set the flask down and placed both hands lightly on Crane's shoulders. Then he smiled.

The smile unsettled Crane more than the violence had. It carried warmth, ease, and the faint suggestion that something had already been decided—and that the decision had not been his.

"Why are you here?"

"I'm Crane. Liaison to St James. We need to talk."

"So talk."

"At The Cot. I can drive you."

Anton tipped his head, eyes bright. "Did you enjoy the drive out here? In that?"

"Not really."

"Didn't think so. These tracks will destroy it. You're lucky it's still in one piece."

Crane felt control sliding away from him for the second time in ten minutes.

"Tell you what," Anton said. "I'll race you back."

"It's more than twelve miles."

"So?"

He laughed—wild, bright, unrestrained—and before Crane could respond, ruffled his hair like an indulgent older brother and bolted. A smaller figure broke from the watching crowd and tore after him: Rory, a look of pure joy on his face.

Crane stood rooted.

"Chop, chop," the TO said. "It's a race now."

Crane scrambled into the Bentley. The engine snarled. The wheels clawed for grip. He lurched away down the track, every impact another wound to his pride. Somewhere ahead of him, Anton Lytle was already running.

Once out of sight of the training ground, Anton slowed. He veered off the main track and dropped into a shadowed gully where the land dipped and the air cooled. Rory kept his shoulder. They moved with the easy confidence of boys who knew every neglected fold of this forgotten terrain.

Three ancient Jeeps crouched beneath the trees, their paint dulled by time, their bodies held together by ingenuity rather than engineering. Loyal veterans of a recent war, still willing.

Anton slid behind the wheel of one while Rory vaulted into the passenger seat. The engine coughed awake—threatening, rattling, briefly threatening to give up entirely—before settling into a grudging, uneven growl. Anton swung the Jeep around and doubled back through the treeline to the clearing.

The TO stood waiting. Boots planted. Eyes hard.

"Well," he said quietly. "You've managed to terrify him, challenge him, and cheat him inside five minutes. A record even for you."

Anton shrugged. "Any idea what he wants?"

"Not a clue," the TO said. "But just in case I don't see you again—"

He held out his hand. Anton shook it—firm and brief, without sentiment. Sentiment got men killed.

"And Lytle?"

"Yes?"

"Take the Bentley. That's what I'd do."

Anton's smile was slight but decisive. He nodded once, dropped the Jeep back into gear, and drove it straight over the lip of what looked like a near-vertical descent.

The TO watched it disappear. He breathed out slowly, lingered a moment, then turned back to face his charges.

"Right. Medic—patch up those idiots. The rest of you, twenty miles. Now."

The medic trotted toward the five men groaning in the dirt. The others fell into line with mechanical precision, fear and training binding them into symmetry. Then they surged forward together, boots striking the earth in a single driving rhythm, and a chant rose and rolled out across the plain:

Ee-aye-addio… OneTon…
Ee-aye-addio… OneTon…
We love you, OneTon,
We love you, we do…

Their champion was gone. Their devotion was not.

Anton and Rory followed the gully—the fastest, most direct line.

"Beautiful day," Rory said, leaning into the wind.

"Get to the point."

But they were both grinning. Training had ended the moment Anton ran; now the world outside was calling, and they both intended to answer it.

"Whilst you're having your fireside chat, I'll get the gear ready," Rory said. "Leave the bags behind the water tank. I've added a few bits of ironmongery."

"All the weapons here are accounted for."

"These aren't. Paperless. Family heirlooms."

Anton almost smiled. "Crane?"

"He's new. We have to assume he's been placed for a very specific reason."

"And that is?"

"Don't be coy, Anton."

"All right. Me. But why now? What's changed?"

"Glasgow," Rory said. "No question. Our going AWOL obviously suited them—and Glasgow is a failure in their eyes."

"Makes sense. Whitehall's neck is exposed—they think we're the right people to set up to fail."

"Very possibly. But I don't think you will. You'll either be killed or become unstoppable."

"And that's the risk they're prepared to take?"

"Yes."

"Good to know." Anton paused. "I'm still taking the Bentley."

When Crane pulled onto the sweep at the front of the house, Anton was standing at the door.

Clean shirt. Damp hair. Calm as a Sunday morning, without a trace of hurry. Crane switched off the engine and sat for a moment, absorbing the absurdity of it. The boy hadn't run the distance at all. He had found a better way. Crane climbed out and, for the first time all day, felt a flicker of genuine amusement. He had been outplayed—and outplayed by someone extraordinary—and, despite everything, he found he didn't mind.

Anton stepped forward and extended his hand.

"I deserved that," Crane said, shaking it. "The car was an unexpected gift from my wife."

"She has excellent taste," Anton said.

"Had," Crane replied quietly.

Anton paused. He turned and looked at him properly. "I'm sorry."

Crane nodded once. Anton stepped aside. "After you."

Inside, the CO was waiting. He led them down a narrow corridor and into the Quiet Room—a chamber stripped of anything that might distract or comfort. No décor. No books. Just a table, four chairs, and the dense stillness of a place where truth had been extracted from men for generations.

Anton stood at ease, hands clasped behind his back. Crane took a seat to one side. The CO began.

"Do you know Maggie McRae?"

A flicker crossed Anton's eyes—there and gone.

"Yes."

"What is your relationship with her?"

Anton let the silence stretch just long enough to carry weight. "I know her."

"She's been abducted," the CO said. "By persons unknown. You are under strict orders to do nothing. Do you understand?"

"Yes, sir."

The CO studied him. Crane studied the CO. Neither of them believed him.

* * *

In a quiet yard behind the outbuildings, Rory laid out a canvas bag with the precision of a man preparing for a long night—cash, maps, a change of clothes, and the weapons he wasn't supposed to have. He oiled each piece methodically, counted the rounds twice, then concealed everything behind the old iron water tank beneath scrap metal and a tarpaulin that had been in exactly the same place for three years. Nobody ever moved it. That was the point.

He worked quickly and without waste. Worst-case thinking was his native language, and this was beginning to look like a worst case.

From the rise above the yard he could see the trainees finishing their run—a long, disciplined arc of bodies moving across the plain. The TO would have ordered twenty miles at minimum. Rory would match it before the day was out, and be ready regardless. If Anton was going to war, Rory intended to more than keep up.

In the Quiet Room, the CO's remarks about restraint and procedure wound down into silence. He gestured for Anton to sit. He motioned for Crane to remain.

"There's other news. From home."

The CO cleared his throat.

"Your father died."

Anton stiffened—just enough to register, a single controlled degree of tension and then nothing.

"When?"

"Monday. Peacefully, I'm told. The funeral is on Thursday."

"Can I attend?"

The simplicity of the question wrong-footed the CO. "Yes. Of course. Leave tomorrow, return after the funeral."

"Thank you, sir. Is that all?"

"Yes. Carry on."

Anton stood.

No salutes were required at The Cot; the place had no interest in ceremony. But Anton surprised them both. He came to full attention and saluted—crisp, formal, unhesitating—and held it.

The CO and Crane returned it automatically, and remained standing long after the door had closed behind him.

"What were we saluting?" Crane murmured.

"Him, I think," the CO said.

He crossed the room, opened a cupboard, and retrieved a bottle of whisky. He poured two large measures, handed one to Crane, and sat.

"I'm supposed to assess you, Major," he said. "Send back a report. First impressions."

Crane took a measured sip. "Was this all a stitch-up from the start?"

The CO's smile was thin. "Why do you ask?"

"He challenged me to a race back," Crane said. "And then cheated."

"Did he actually cheat?" the CO asked gently.

"Well… no. Not exactly."

"I imagine he kept certain details from you. A difference of degree."

Crane nodded. "Expected behaviour?"

"From one of the Boys? Yes. From that one in particular? Absolutely."

The CO studied him for a moment.

"You're not our usual Liaison Officer," he said.

"How much do you know?" Crane replied.

"What is it now? Seventy-one years until the Trust ceases to be a legal entity?"

"November the tenth, 2030. The official date of termination."

"Perfect terminology."

"Frightening is the generally accepted view in Whitehall," Crane found himself admitting.

"The bridge for the final fifty." The CO turned his glass slowly in his hands. "That's how they described your role to me."

"Some are predicting the worst."

"It's not the crises that concern us. We can handle crises. It's the drift. The softening. The slow hollowing-out of the institutions that are supposed to hold everything together—Whitehall most of all. Give it thirty years and the talent will have gone elsewhere, to wherever the money is, and what remains will call itself service and mean something quite different."

Crane's eyes moved to the door through which Anton had walked. "That's where he comes in?"

The CO was quiet for a moment, turning his glass.

"Real leadership will be scarce, when it matters most. If there is a list—and I doubt one even exists—his name should be the only one on it."

Crane exhaled slowly. "His grandfather is… interesting."

"Arthur," the CO said. "A principled bastard. Too much red for some tastes—but he was right about Vavilov. We should have brought the man over before Stalin killed him. Arthur's thinking is ridiculed now, but we'll look back and thank him for holding to it. And his instinct on people is extraordinary. That's the inheritance that matters."

Crane nodded. Old knowledge settled between them.

"And his father?" Crane asked quietly.

"Basil Lytle. The TT racer. Brilliant businessman, immensely gifted. And then the accident—hit the back of a bus at twenty miles an hour, his knee shattered. Never recovered from it, not really. Not psychologically. The rumour is it was an overdose that finally killed him. Intentional or otherwise, nobody will say."

"I saw him on the island in '36," Crane said. Then, after a pause: "I think I'll go to the funeral. Unless you consider it inappropriate."

"Major Crane, what I consider appropriate is entirely irrelevant. If you think you should go, then go."

Silence settled. Old ghosts, briefly disturbed.

"So," Crane said at last. "If Anton disobeys you—?"

The CO turned to the window.

Outside, Anton and four accomplices were pushing the Bentley silently across the sweep, moving it with the careful, unhurried ease of men poaching a prized stag from a Highland estate. A full colonel, the plumber who serviced the boilers, the bursar, and the chambermaid—all of them grinning like schoolchildren who could not quite believe their own boldness.

The CO watched for a moment, then turned back.

"Oh, he'll disobey me," he said. "That's rather the point. We've left things vague for two reasons. One: he always ignores direct orders. And two: when he does, the outcome is invariably better than anything we could have planned."

"So this really is his graduation."

"That," the CO said, finishing his drink, "depends entirely on whether he survives."

A gong sounded—distant, domestically warm.

"Lunch," the CO said, rising. "The food here is excellent. Joe works wonders in the garden, and the cooks probably taught Elizabeth David everything she knows. It's like Antibes—if Antibes trained killers."

They entered the dining room together. Sunlight flooded in through open French doors and lay in long rectangles across the floorboards, and a trestle table ran the length of the room with people queuing along it without reference to rank—staff beside senior figures, household names beside administrators. Plates piled high. Tumblers of simple wine. Laughter and easy conversation, no shop talk, no performance. Outside, Joe moved between his rows of herbs with the unhurried focus of a man who understood that useful beauty was not a contradiction in terms.

Crane sat and let the warmth settle on his face. For the first time in months, he was aware of how much he missed his wife.

Afterwards, they sat outside over small cups of coffee in the slow afternoon sun.

"It's hard to accept," Crane said, "that an institution capable of producing coffee this good has been turning out killers for nearly a hundred and eighty years."

"I know," the CO said. "We own the company. Used to belong to an Italian count who got into a spot of bother."

They sat in companionable silence for a while.

Crane lit a cigarette and exhaled into the bright air.

"Why do I get the feeling you're hiding something from me?"

"Ah," the CO said. "Follow me."

They walked back out to the gravel sweep. The space where the Bentley had stood was empty. Crane stopped.

The CO attempted surprise with the practised ease of a man who had been attempting surprise professionally for thirty years.

"Good God," he said. "Who the hell does he think he is? James bloody Bond?"

Crane's jaw flexed. He looked at the empty space for a long moment.

"How is Ian, by the way?" the CO added.

“Intolerable,” Crane replied. “We should never have given him access to the archive.”

Chapter Three

Crane might have been a liaison officer, but he was considerably more than a bureaucrat. He had earned the right to wear the crimson ribbon of a Victoria Cross.

The CO stood with him a moment longer on the sweep, both men absorbing the absence of the car. It wasn’t the theft that registered. Nothing here was ever truly stolen. It was the audacity — the certainty, the cheerful inevitability that Anton Lytle would do exactly as he pleased and leave the rest of them to adjust accordingly.

The CO clapped him lightly on the shoulder. “No point standing here looking wounded. We’ve got the rest of the day to survive.”

They went inside. The Cot was an odd place — monastic discipline tempered by Mediterranean ease, men and women trained for violence living between operations with a deliberate intensity that bordered on indulgence. Through the rear window, Joe was inspecting his herbs with the focus of a man who knew exactly what he had and intended to keep it.

Crane sat. The CO poured coffee.

“You’ll get used to this place,” the CO said. “It’s a contradiction. That’s why it works.”

Crane nodded but didn’t reply. He looked out at the lawn, where Rory was crossing at a run — stripped to the waist, adding miles to the twenty he’d already done, moving without apparent effort.

“He won’t just follow Anton,” the CO said. “He’ll guide him.”

“He has his own name for himself,” the CO said. “First day, I was reading from his file — his proper name — when he stopped me. Politely enough. ‘My name is Rory Evans,’ he said. I told him that wasn’t very Irish. He said nothing. He simply picked up his kit and left.”

“Are they equals?”

“No. Different instruments entirely. Anton improvises — Rory anticipates.”

“Is Anton perhaps too dangerous? Too unpredictable?”

The CO’s smile vanished. “Dangerous is the point.”

He leaned back, arms folded. “You understand today wasn’t accidental. Not precisely planned, but shaped. We nudged events, set the conditions, then waited.”

“To see what Anton would do,” Crane said.

“What he always does. Something both reckless and necessary.”

“You could have ordered him to intervene.”

“That isn’t how the Trust works. If we tell him to rescue her, it becomes our operation. If he chooses to act —” the CO set down his cup “— the consequences belong to him.”

“Useful deniability,” Crane said.

“Useful truth,” the CO replied. “Anton must believe he’s choosing his own path. And in a sense, he is.”

“What happens now?”

“Glasgow.”

“And Maggie McRae?”

“If she’s alive, he’ll find her. If she’s dead, he’ll find who killed her and dismantle them entirely.”

“You seem certain.”

“Not certain. But it’s the only option we have.” The CO finished his coffee. “The boy was never going to be tamed. Only pointed.”

Before Crane could speak, a voice came from the corridor.

“Sir.”

A young woman stood in the doorway — composed, brisk, a clipboard held against her chest.

“Yes, Frances?”

“They’re ready for you in the Quiet Room. Documents from Appleby, marked Immediate.”

The CO sighed. “Of course they are.”

“Your staff seem unusually capable,” Crane said quietly as they walked.

“They’re all Trust. Housemaids, gardeners, cooks. The Cot has no civilians.”

“And Frances?”

“A mathematician. Top of her year at Somerville. She keeps us alive.”

They re-entered the Quiet Room. Fresh envelopes lay on the table — heavy, wax-sealed. The CO broke one open and scanned the contents in silence.

“Well,” he said. “That settles it.”

Crane read the heading:

OPERATION GLASGOW — STRATEGIC OUTLINE

SUBJECT: McRae, MARGARET (‘MAGGIE’) — STATUS UNKNOWN

Maps. Intelligence fragments. Names.

“They’re going to war,” Crane said.

The CO folded the dossier and slid it back into its envelope. “Seems that way. Let’s hope he’s still there to determine the outcome.”

“Some graduation.”

“This is The Pound. Men graduate here by surviving what kills everyone else.”

They stepped into the oak-panelled hallway. Afternoon light slanted across the floorboards.

“You realise,” Crane said, “that by the time we hear from him again, half the Glasgow underworld may no longer exist.”

“That would be optimistic,” the CO replied. “He’ll do more than that.”

“What makes you so sure?”

The CO considered. “Some men break when faced with chaos. Others get lost in it. Anton rearranges it.”

“Leadership?” Crane said.

“No. Purpose. Leadership can be taught. Purpose can’t.”
