Book One · First Draft Development

The Revision Process: v07 → v08 → v09

After initial manuscript completion, Book One underwent a systematic chapter-by-chapter revision process. This was not wholesale rewriting but granular refinement: each chapter revised individually, tested, and integrated into successive complete drafts. The progression shows how the narrative voice clarified and deepened as the work progressed.

v07: The Chapter-by-Chapter Rewrite Foundation

Version 07 represents the systematic phase-two revision process. Starting from an existing manuscript, 54 individual chapter files were created and refined. These were not isolated rewrites; each revision was tested against the whole, and each new chapter file incorporated lessons from previous chapters.

Granularity of Process: This list shows the fineness of the revision process. 54 individual chapter files, each a complete rewrite of a single chapter, demonstrates an approach focused on deep work within discrete sections rather than broad global revision. Each chapter was treated as a problem to be solved completely before moving to the next.

The v07 process also included cumulative build-outs (files labelled 1-10, 1-20, 1-30, etc.) which tested how individual revisions integrated into larger narrative sequences. This allowed for testing of pacing, tonal consistency, and the accumulation of thematic threads across multiple chapters.

v08: Integration and Structural Testing

Version 08 took the 54 revised chapters and integrated them into a complete manuscript. This version tested whether the granular improvements at chapter level created a coherent whole. The v08 folder contains phase-two chapter bundles (Ch 6-10, Ch 11-15, etc.), showing how individual revisions were consolidated into larger narrative units for integration testing.

V08: Integration Phase

Chapters bundled and tested in 5-chapter groups

Focus: Narrative coherence, pacing across chapter sequences, tonal consistency, character arc clarity

Output: Complete manuscript ready for final polish

Testing Priorities in v08

v09 FINAL: The Completed Draft

Version 09 represents the final polish. After integration testing in v08, v09 made targeted refinements to language, rhythm, and emphasis. This was not wholesale rewriting but the final calibration — what writers call "reading the page aloud" work.

v09 (Complete Draft)

Date completed: March 9, 2026

Word count: 114,000 words

Status: Full novel, publication ready

From v09 to Publication Ready

The distinction between v09 (initial completion) and v09 FINAL (copyedit incorporated) marks the moment where the manuscript transitioned from being a writer's draft to a publishable text. This involved:

The Progression in Numbers

The revision process shows clear progression:

v07: Chapter-by-chapter revision

54 individual chapter files created and revised

Cumulative integration tests at 10-chapter, 20-chapter, 30-chapter, etc. intervals

v08: Integration to complete manuscript

Individual chapters consolidated into chapter bundles

Complete manuscript assembled for coherence testing

v09: Final manuscript

Full manuscript: 114,000 words

Final polish applied

v09 FINAL: Publication ready

Copyedit incorporated

Ready for publication

What This Process Shows

The movement from v07 to v09 FINAL demonstrates a disciplined approach to revision:

The Scale of Revision: 54 individual chapter rewrites, consolidated into integration tests, tested for structural coherence, polished for final presentation — this shows a manuscript that was not simply written but built, tested, and verified before publication. This is the granular work that produces finished narrative.
